Hidden braces

Lingual braces

Lingual braces are another treatment option for subtle teeth alignment. Hidden from sight, these braces are attached to the back of the teeth, rather than the front, allowing you to continue with your everyday life while your teeth are gently encouraged into your desired alignment. Lingual braces are best placed to treat teeth that may need complex rotations, changes in height or to close difficult gaps, but your local Aston Clinton orthodontist will talk to you about the best and most effective treatment for your teeth.

What do lingual braces involve?

Your orthodontist will take an impression of your teeth to send to a dental laboratory where the brackets are made specially to fit you. The application is similar to that of traditional fixed braces, where an adhesive is used to bond the brackets to the back of your teeth, and a gentle, continuous pressure is applied over the course of around 18-36 months using either metal or elastic arches. This will involve regular visits to your orthodontist.

The benefits of lingual braces:

  • They are custom made to be unique to you.
  • They are near-invisible, as they are fixed to the back rather than the front of your teeth.
  • They are effective is treating difficult teeth and complex rotations.
  • Any tooth discolouration will occur on the back of the teeth rather than the front.

Invisalign

To straighten your smile almost invisibly, Invisalign is a revolutionary and completely transparent orthodontic treatment. Your Aston Clinton Dental & Implant Clinic orthodontist is expertly trained to deliver one of the most discreet and comfortable ways to move your teeth into alignment. These invisible braces, or aligners, fit snugly over your teeth, to gently guide them into position. There’s no tightening process as the clear aligners gradually move your teeth into position. Invisalign also minimises the impact on your day-to-day life, as they have minimal affect on your speech and can be removed for eating.

What does Invisalign involve?

Before you even begin treatment, a custom-made digital 3D treatment plan – a ClinCheck© – is carried out. You have the opportunity to review this, to see exactly what your teeth will look like at the end of the treatment process before you commit.

The treatment itself involves wearing a series of removable plastic dental aligners that have been specially designed for your mouth, for between 20-22 hours per day. Every one to two weeks you will move to your next aligner. Your specialist will see you every six to eight weeks to review the movement of your teeth and give you your next set of aligners. Depending on your needs and the current alignment of your teeth, you could see a straighter smile in as little as three months.

The benefits of using Invisalign:

  • They are almost invisible, so no-one will know you are undergoing dental treatment.
  • They are removable, so you can eat comfortably.
  • Studies have shown that Invisalign is better for your dental hygiene.
  • They are more comfortable than traditional, fixed braces.

Fixed braces

Fixed braces are the most well-known teeth alignment treatment. A series of brackets is adhered directly to your teeth, connected by metallic or elastic arches that are adjusted at intervals by your orthodontist until the desired alignment is achieved.

What do fixed braces involve?

Traditional braces are metal, but you also have the option of choosing ceramic braces, which are made to match the colour of your teeth and are a more discreet option. After a thorough assessment of your teeth, your orthodontist will adhere the brackets to the front of your teeth which will connect with either arch (made from either wire or elastic). Every six to eight weeks, your orthodontist will tighten the archwire encouraging your teeth to move into their new, desired alignment. In adults, this process usually takes from 18 months to three years.

The benefits of fixed braces:

  • They are a strong, durable tooth alignment option.
  • They are best suited for over-crowded and crooked teeth.
  • They are cost-effective.
